Meet Marvin the Moose

Dear Kindergarten parents,
I would like to introduce you to Marvin the Moose.  He is a very friendly moose who loves to go on adventures!  When Marvin comes home with your child for the weekend, please take him everywhere you go.  There is a book included in Marvin's travel bag.  The children should draw pictures and write about their adventures with Marvin.
Upon Marvin's return to school every Monday, the children will tell us of their adventures.  Then, Marvin and his book will stay in our reading center during the week where the children can enjoy reading "The Adventures of Marvin the Moose".
Have fun!
Mrs. Lyons
P.S. To insure that all of the children have a turn with Marvin before the end of the school year, Marvin will start his journey this weekend.

A visit from Dr. Jaffee

Dr. Jaffee visited our class to tell us about his job of being a doctor. He is a special doctor, a urologist.  It wasn't planned to happen this way but after learning about crystals with Dr. Rosler earlier that morning, Dr. Jaffee explained how kidney stones form and that they are crystals also!  He told the children that the best way to prevent kidney stones from forming is to eat lots of fruits and vegetables and to drink lots of water.  He showed the class xrays and the special tool he uses to help people when they have a kidney stone.  Thank you, Dr. Jaffee.

Growing crystals

Another fascinating science lesson for the kindergarten class...  We learned that chemicals in the earth work with water to form crystals.  Crystals form out of solutions, melts or vapors.  Salt is an example of crystals formed out of a solution.
Dr. Rosler brought in salt crystals that she made at home by combining lots of salt and warm water.  She let the container sit open so the water would evaporate leaving crystals of sodium chloride.

Words to think about... solution and evaporate.

A crystal growing kit was put together by Dr. Rosler and the children were fascinated to watch the experiment over the course of a day.

How cool is that?  Thank you, Dr. Rosler!

The 100th Day is almost here...

We are looking forward to this special day.  The big event will take place next Thursday...  the same day as Zimriyah!!
The children will bring home their "collection bags" today.  You should find a large ziploc bag with your child's name on it in their folders.  Please have your child bring in their collection in the large ziploc bag on Friday, February 11th.
Have fun counting to 100!

Before or after vacation, only Mother Nature knows...

Barring anymore snow days, the 100th day of school will fall on Thursday February 17th!!  The same day as Zimriyah...
The children will bring home a large ziploc bag next week.  I have asked them to bring in "100" of something, (e.g. 100 paper clips, pennies, jelly beans, buttons, etc.)  Have fun counting and be creative!
Their "collections" will be on display starting February 14th.
We will be busy doing 100th day activities during the week of February 14 through the 18th.
Every day we have added an apple to our magnetic apple tree, a penny to our counting board and a Hershey kiss to our candy jar.  The children are so excited about this special event!
