The ABC's of Thanksgiving

Thank you all for joining us!
The children were so excited to put on this play for you.
They loved making their costumes and learning their lines.
We practiced our songs every day.
This presentation was a simple way of sharing all the interesting details we have been learning about the Pilgrims and their journey to the new world.

A special thank you to Lisa for organizing the "after party" and to all of the families who sent in items for our celebration.

 Meet the friendly Wampanoags.
 Good morrow Pilgrims.
Joined together for the harvest feast.
Ready to tell the story.

Our visit to the grocery store...

Our trip to Whole Foods Market was so much fun!
We continue to learn about community helpers and how the work they do helps everyone who lives in a community.  The children were told about many activities and events that Whole Foods participates in as part of their community out-reach.
We were lucky enough to be at the store on America Recycles Day.  Aviv brought in 2 backpacks to donate/recycle to the "Backpacker" program which provides food and supplies to needy children.
Thank you, Aviv!
We learned that much of the produce Whole Foods sells comes from local growers. The colors of the fruits and vegetables were amazing!  The children were treated to a delicious and nutritious snack of fresh fruits. They each made a fruit kabob and got to "eat the rainbow".  It was a fun experience for the children.  Thank you to our moms, Sandra and Lisa, for chaperoning this field trip.

From the floral department to the bakery, the children enjoyed learning about what happens at a grocery store.

We learned about the importance of "eating the rainbow".

This was our guide... Bonnie.  She is the Marketing Team Leader.

We learned about honey bees and the important work they do.

We loved looking at all of the yummy treats in the bakery case.

And finally, making a rainbow kabob.  Red, orange, yellow....

YUMMY

Bonnie had goody bags for us to take home.

We talked about the importance of recycling everyday.

Thank you Whole Foods Market!!

G-E-R-M-S....

This week we learned about GERMS.  Tiny little organisms that are everywhere.  We took samples from around the classroom... the circle time rug, the door knob and the water fountain in the hall.  We also took samples from our own hands.  We will be watching our petri dishes to see what kind of molds will grow.  I think the children will want to wash their hands more often once they see what is growing in the petri dishes!!  The children were amazed to learn that some germs are good germs.... yogurt (bacteria), blue cheese (mold) and mushrooms (fungus).  Another fun science lesson for our class.
Thank you to Dr. Rosler and her assistant Eli.   :-)

Molecules, penguins, volcanoes....

Huddling together like penguins do to keep warm.

Brrrrrrrrr.....

Holding the hand-boiler...

The children were amazed.

Metal, wood and plastic spoons in hot water.
Chocolate chips holding on...

Why did the chocolate chip slide off of the metal spoon?

We had another fun science class with Dr. Rosler,
        a.k.a. Science Mom.
  • She did an awesome experiment on equilibrium (great words for "E" week).  She explained how molecules "huddle together like penguins" when they are cold and how they "separate or stretch apart when they are hot like an erupting volcano".
  • We observed a demonstration on how heat rises by using different colored solutions.
  • The children got to hold a hand-boiler and watch how the heat from their hands made the water bubble up through the tubes.
  • Using 3 spoons (metal, wood and plastic), butter and chocolate chips, we observed that heat can move through things.  Only the chocolate chip on the metal spoon slid off because we learned that metal conducts heat.
  • How lucky are we to have such great learning adventures in science? Thank you Dr. Rosler!
